Post-Microsoft Ignite: Innovations and directions for 2025 — More AI and Copilot

Microsoft Ignite is an annual showcase of innovations in Microsoft's products and services, serving as a benchmark for leading technologies available in the market. The presentations during Microsoft Ignite offer insights into the direction IT technologies will evolve in the coming year—this time, 2025. So, what was discussed during Microsoft Ignite? One thing is clear: Microsoft is consistently expanding Copilot's capabilities.

A Word About Microsoft Ignite 2024

This year's event took place from November 18 to 22 in Chicago and online. The event attracted 200,000 registrants, with 14,000 attending in person. Participants could choose from over 800 sessions, workshops, and demonstrations. As always, announcements of new features were a major draw. This year, Microsoft unveiled over 80 new products and features, most of which focus on AI and security.

We reviewed the announcements from this year's conference to explore technological trends and selected features related to everyday tasks, teamwork, data analysis, and tool-building. Many features are currently in preview and are planned for phased releases in 2025.

Microsoft Copilot and “Agents”

Microsoft Copilot, introduced as an AI assistant, is gaining traction among companies worldwide. According to Microsoft, 70% of Fortune 500 companies already use Copilot, highlighting the growing demand for AI in the business environment. At the conference, Microsoft announced several new functionalities, specializations, and integrations for Copilot across Microsoft 365, Azure, and various devices.

Specialized Roles for Agents

  • Agents in SharePoint will assist users in finding information within the SharePoint service. Users can build custom agents tailored to specific files, folders, or sites. Agents can be edited, named, and given specific behaviors, and shared via email, meetings, and chats. Users can ask agents questions and receive real-time answers.
  • Facilitator Agent in Teams acts as a moderator during meetings and chats. In meetings, the facilitator takes real-time notes, enabling seamless collaboration. In chats, the facilitator summarizes key information during discussions.
  • Interpreter Agent enables real-time translation during Teams meetings in up to nine languages, allowing participants to speak and listen in their preferred language. It can also simulate voices through the agent.
  • Project Manager Agent automates project management in Planner, handling tasks from creating plans (from scratch or templates) to assigning tasks, tracking progress, and overseeing execution.

New Features in Microsoft 365 Copilot

Copilot expands its capabilities across apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams:

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Actions: This feature allows users to easily delegate tasks to Copilot, such as requesting agendas from team members, compiling weekly reports, or drafting daily summary emails for important communications. Tasks can be automated, on-demand, or triggered by specific events.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot in Teams introduces advanced analytics capabilities: during meetings, Copilot analyzes shared content, discussions, and chats. Features include summarizing visual content, consolidating insights from conversations and presentations, and generating new materials based on the entire meeting.
  • Copilot in Teams enables quick summaries of files shared in chats. This function works in both individual and group chats while adhering to file security and sensitivity guidelines.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot in PowerPoint can translate an entire document into one of 40 languages while maintaining the overall design of each slide.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot in Excel empowers users of all skill levels to create spreadsheets tailored to their tasks. Users can instruct Copilot on what they want to create, and it will suggest and refine a template with headers, formulas, and visualizations.

Azure AI Foundry

Azure AI Foundry is a platform for organizations to design, customize, and manage AI applications and agents at scale. It integrates existing Azure AI models, tools, and security solutions with new technologies. The platform connects seamlessly with popular developer tools like GitHub, Visual Studio, and Copilot Studio. New services include:

  • Azure AI Foundry Portal: A management hub for developers to explore and evaluate AI models, services, and tools. It enables cross-functional teams to manage and optimize AI applications, resources, permissions, and connected assets.
  • Azure AI Agent Service: Allows developers to create and scale personalized agents using data from Microsoft 365, Fabric OneLake, SAP, Salesforce, and other platforms to automate business processes (e.g., HR assistants, customer service, project management). Features like "bring your own storage" (BYOS) and private networking ensure data privacy and regulatory compliance.
  • Copilot Studio Integration with Azure AI Foundry: This integration gives agents built in Microsoft Copilot Studio access to Azure’s catalog of over 1,800 AI models (including GPT-4 and advanced audio/video models), enabling creators to use finely tuned industry-specific models and Azure AI Search for enterprises.

Microsoft Fabric

Microsoft Fabric introduces Fabric Databases, which simplify AI application development with intuitive, autonomous databases. The SQL Database in Fabric provides a unified data platform, allowing AI to be applied to both operational and analytical data. Key benefits include:

  • Faster application development: Data is automatically replicated to OneLake, enabling instant access to analytical engines.
  • Higher productivity: Databases automatically optimize resources and scale within seconds, delivering consistent and efficient performance through intelligent indexing.
  • Innovation with Copilot in Fabric: Converts natural language queries into SQL, auto-completes code, and provides corrections and explanations.
  • CI/CD support: Integration with GitHub and SQL Projects in Visual Studio Code simplifies version control and deployment.
  • Security: A unified data environment ensures consistent data security policies for both operational and analytical data.

Quantum Computing Innovations

Microsoft, in collaboration with Atom Computing, has developed quantum computing tools offering 24 reliable logical qubits, paving the way for breakthroughs in science and technology. This quantum machine, set for release by the end of 2025, is expected to surpass classical computing capabilities, marking it as the world’s largest commercial offering.
